I’ve been asked by Wavey Dave Howarth to participate in a 20 day music challenge about LPs that influenced my musical tastes enduringly.
One album per day for 20 days – and I’m behind already, of course, so let’s catch up…
Day 7 – David Lee Roth – A Little Ain’t Enough
I was going to rep Diamond Dave with his first solo effort, Eat ‘Em And Smile, until I saw Julian share this one, DLR’s third effort. Because, as I commented on Julian’s post, I simply don’t understand how this is not more appreciated than it is.
It’s simply a great album – I bought the CD as soon as it was released, I think, and only in recent months finally found a good copy on vinyl. Dave is never the greatest singer, but he’s undoubtedly one of the greatest entertainers in rock and can always dredge up a hilarious turn of phrase. In the title track, for instance, it’s “I kissed her on her Daddy’s boat, and shot across the lake.” There’s an image for ya.
The album is a bit heavier than his two previous – and pretty eclectic, showing a bit more blues influence at times, never less than on Sensible Shoes, one of my favourite DLR songs of all time. Hammerhead Shark, Tell The Truth, Lady Luck, Dogtown Shuffle and wowzers – It’s Showtime! – what a blast that track is!
Matter o’ fact, I’m gonna play it now…
